We are safety fanatics.

The North Carolina Department of Labor recently validated what we have known for some time. McDonald York's safety program is one the finest in the Triangle. We recently received the North Carolina Department of Labor Building STAR which recognizes contractors that display outstanding performance in combination with management's commitment to establish and maintain a safe workplace. McDonald York is one of only 19 Building STAR companies across the state.

Perhaps it is because we are family owned, but safety is the most important thing we do every day and as core value informs our clients, subcontractors and employees that we are proactive in this approach.

Our current EMR (Experience Modification Rate) assigned by the North Carolina Rate Bureau is 0.85. This equates to lower risk and less operating costs. In 2008, McDonald York experienced no lost time injuries and completed the year with a Total Incidence Rate of 2.71. Comparable Industry Averages for Lost Time and Recordable Rates are 2.40 and 3.50 respectively. We are proud to say that these statistics represent the best safety performance in the company's history.

The safety performance in 2008 was no fluke. In the last decade, McDonald York has out performed the Triangle construction industry by a wide margin in these key statistical areas and as a direct result, continues to be recognized at state and local levels for maintaining a safe workplace.

Safety GoalsSafety on Your Job

Our safety goals are:

  • Complete every project with "zero" incidents
  • Operate at the highest achievable level by having the safest and best trained employees in the industry
  • Manage risk to protect life, limb and property with competent leadership for our clients, subcontractors and employees

Each project utilizes a comprehensive, site-specific safety program that originates in the preconstruction process and evolves as conditions change. McDonald York's Safety Director participates in site construction planning to identify and address safety issues and from this evaluation, develops a safety plan that addresses its unique characteristics. A pre-job safety planning checklist is used to ensure the known and predictable hazards are made known to everyone involved. Subcontractors are also required to submit for approval, their own site specific safety plans.

Comprehensive job site safety inspections occur frequently and regularly and include:

  • Daily inspections by foremen and safety monitors
  • Weekly inspections with written reports by the superintendent
  • Unannounced inspections by the safety director

In addition to the mandatory weekly "Tool Box" safety meetings for all workers, McDonald York requires daily and pre-task STA's (Safety Task Assignments). Each subcontractor is required to provide a representative in formal, weekly progress meetings that has the authority to respond to safety concerns.
